Technical Support Engineer

The TSE is part of the Technical Support team that supports, maintains, and improves computing infrastructure for scientists, students, and administrative staff at the Biolab personnel at the NMC – a non-profit research and education organization in Los Alamos. Candidate must be able to operate and troubleshoot issues on Linux, Mac, and Windows laptop, desktop, and server equipment as well as networking computer infrastructure, and most of the software that goes along with running such systems. This is a full-time position with full benefits.
 
Qualifications:
  • A degree in Computer Science, Management Information Systems, Network or Systems Administration/Engineering or related field with some relevant experience, or equivalent work experience.
  • Proven time management and prioritization skills are essential. An ability to work in a tightly integrated team and take initiative to reach the common goal of improving the IT infrastructure of the NMC.
 Required skill
  • Current knowledge of and applied working experience in Linux, Mac, and Windows systems administration.
  • Shell scripting in bash, tcsh, perl, python, or similar
  • Solid understanding of networking principles, configuration, and troubleshooting.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide support to people of all skill levels and experience working in a technical support position.
General programming skills:

Research Laboratory Technician on Plant Transformation

The New Mexico Consortium (NMC) in Los Alamos, NM, is non-profit corporation formed by the three New Mexico research universities in order to facilitate research in the state of New Mexico, and specifically to increase research collaborations between universities, industry and Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). The NMC provides agile and accountable operations to execute joint initiatives in science, education and economic development.
 
Position Summary: The Research Laboratory Technician will become a part of plant transformation group that works on developing transgenics using novel disease resistance genes.  The individual will be responsible for developing and executing methodologies for grapevine tissue culture, transformation and cultivation activities. The position is immediately available. 
 
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Develop and perform tissue culture, transformation, and cultivation methodologies for development of novel diseases resistant grapevine cultivars.
  • Design and execute experiments to improve efficiencies in the transformation of targeted grapevine cultivars.
  • Troubleshoot and develop effective solutions when problems arise.
  • Track tasks, milestones, and timelines.
  • Maintain detailed and organized records of project data and materials.
  • Contribute to scientific discussions and present research outcomes to peers and management.
  • Coordinate pipeline operations and train new employees.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with plant tissue culture and transformation, especially on grapevine.
  • Ability to maintain a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Excellent planning, organization, and execution skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a plant transformation team.

Postdoctoral Researcher

The New Mexico Consortium (NMC) is seeking a talented and enthusiastic Postdoctoral Researcher to join a team of scientists at the NMC and Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) to advance a DOE-funded project focused on enhancing productivity and stability of algal cultures through the development of algal-algal and algal-bacteria consortia. The project was developed in response to the Bioenergy Technologies’ Office (BETO) Productivity Enhanced Algae and Tool-Kits (PEAK) FOA (http://bit.ly/2HBN1i4). The researcher will be responsible for conducting culture-based experiments focused on the growth of algal monocultures and consortia as well as leading other relevant work. This is a full-time position that offers a competitive salary and benefits (health, dental, life, disability and retirement plan).
 
The minimum qualifications for this position include a Ph.D. in biology or other relevant discipline, experience conducting experiments with phytoplankton cultures, as well as the following KSAs:
 
A strong working knowledge of: phytoplankton biology, physiology, and ecology; phytoplankton culturing techniques; sterile technique; standard laboratory equipment to measure phytoplankton biomass and health; microscopy; and methods of data collection and analysis.
 
The ability to: effectively maintain algal cultures in the laboratory; conduct independent and collaborative research; complete tasks timely and efficiently; establish and maintain strong working relationships with others; and utilize problem-solving techniques.
 
Skills to: plan and coordinate work assignments; collect, record and analyze data; communicate effectively; maintain records; write technical reports and peer reviewed publications; and understand and apply applicable rules, regulations, policies and procedures.

Microalgal Biotechnology Research Service Position

The NMC is offering an opportunity for an interested candidate to participate in exploratory research at the NMC Biological Laboratory. This is a part-time unpaid service position, with a minimum level of effort of 10 hrs/week.Our plant biology initiative performs basic research with impacts on sustainable energy production through biofuels, food security and climate induced ecological change. This is a valuable opportunity for a graduate student, retired scientist, or scientist re-entering the workforce to help advance original research, participate in the scientific publication process, hone laboratory skills and collaborate with other researchers at the NMC.

Responsibilities:

The research will involve PCR screening of transgenic algae. Duties will include:

  • Development of trait-specific bioassays
  • Evaluating gene regulation
  • Developing plasmid constructs
  • Help design and conduct scientific experimental protocols
  • Provide rigorous data assessment and result reports
Preferred Qualifications
  • Advanced degree in microbiology, molecular biology or comparable discipline
  • Competence in molecular biology techniques
  • Experience working under sterile laboratory conditions
