The NMC Plant Biology Initiative is lead by Dr. Steve Buelow, Dr. Srinivas Iyer and Dr. Jose Olivarez. The management team establishes the technical scope and objectives of the initiatives, executes program development strategy and jointly manages research activities within the initiatives.

Dr. Steven Buelow,

Dr. Buelow is responsible for the leadership, management, and strategic direction of the organization. Before joining the New Mexico Consortium in 2012 as the Director of Laboratory Research, Dr. Buelow held research and management positions at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). As Leader of the Energy Security Center, he worked with LANL line and program organizations to coordinate the development of LANL’s Energy Security Mission.

Dr. Buelow has degrees in Chemistry and Mathematics from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse and in Physics and Chemical Physics from Harvard University. While at LANL, he initiated and led research projects in a wide range of technical areas including hydrothermal chemistry, high-resolution spectroscopy, and the measurement of ultra-fast dynamical processes. At LANL Dr. Buelow worked with more than seventy students and nearly two-dozen post-doctoral students and was recognized for excellence as a mentor.


Dr. Srinivas Iyer,

Srinivas Iyer is the Group Leader of B-11, the Bioenergy and Biome Sciences group in the Biosciences Division of LANL.  The ~ 70 member group has a research portfolio that spans areas from genome sciences and algal biology to biophysical chemistry and environmental microbiology.  Srinivas maintains his research interests in mass spectrometry based proteomics and lipid based biomimetic structures.  He obtained his PhD in Biochemistry from the University of Houston, TX and completed postdoctoral training at the University of New Mexico, Albuquerque and at LANL prior to his hire as a staff scientist at LANL.  In addition to his experimental research, Srinivas has held rotational positions in the LANL STB Peer review and Metrics office as well as the LANl National Security Education center.  He is also the biotechnology chair of the Nanotech Conference and Trade Show.

Dr. Jose Olivares,

Dr. Olivares serves Division Leader for the Bioscience Division at Los Alamos National Laboratory. In this position, he provides strategic, technical and operational management for all activities within the Division. Major focus areas for the 150 staff within the Division include a long-standing effort in biosecurity, biosurveillance, and public health security. New areas of growth include bioenergy and biome science. He is the current Executive Director of the National Alliance for Advanced Biofuels and Bioproducts, a consortium of 40 institutions recently funded by DOEEERE Office of Biomass Programs.

Previously he served in several program and technical management positions at the Laboratory, including Biofuels Program Manager and acting Division Leader for Chemistry. In these positions he was responsible for developing strategic direction for science programs, operations, and leading specific program development efforts. Dr. Olivares has extensive experience with private industry and serves as consultant for several small companies and government agencies. One of his passions is technology commercialization.

Dr. Olivares is an adjunct member of The Danforth Plant Science Center, a preeminent non-profit institution dedicated to plant research for food and energy, in St. Louis. He is also a partner of the consulting firm Biologic Energy Partners, LLC, and co-Editor-in-Chief of the scientific journal Algal Research (Elsevier Publishers). He received a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from Wilkes College, and his Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry from Iowa State University. His research focus has been primarily in instrumentation for mass spectrometry and biological and chemical sensor development for national security and health related applications.
