OpenModel Graduate Student Internship
Starts January 31 or later. The OpenModel projects is an a open-source repository of data for modeling global energy systems. The project, led by Dr. Rajan Gupta, collects, collates and organizes information on existing energy infrastructure and resources. The integrated data set can be analyzed with software tools like Google, Google Earth and Wikipedia or by privately developed tools. The goal is to use Open Models to understand the current energy systems on a global level. This internship is intended for a student who can integrate this project into their research program.

The project, led by Dr. Rajan Gupta, collects, collates and organizes information on existing energy infrastructure and resources. The integrated data set can be analyzed with software tools like Google, Google Earth and Wikipedia or by privately developed tools. The goal is to use Open Models to understand the current energy systems on a global level. The student will be responsible for collecting, formatting, documenting data sets for the site and automation of the same; developing the data structures to support the analysis tools; developing analysis tools and connections to analysis tools.
The applicant should have an interest in systems
analysis, data management including creating metadata based on
heterogeneous input, and programming in perl or C. The project has
very broad application can be integrated with research programs in Planetary and Earth Sciences, Economics, Engineering, Business, Systems Analysis, Mathematics, Computer Science and other areas. A strong application will be a proposal for the
integration of this project with the applicant's discipline and
research interest.
The position is open to actively enrolled students in good standing who have completed their undergraduate degree.
The position will require travel to Los Alamos once a month. Travel expenses will be reimbursed.
The New Mexico Consortium will support a student from a New Mexico
College or University for 1 year on this project. The position is 50% time during the academic year and full time in the summer. The position will be compensated at the standard salary level for a graduate student as a research associate at the parent institution. The position requires a mentor/sponsor at the parent institution. Applicants are encouraged to identify a sponsor and indicate the sponsor in the application; however, the NMC can work with the applicant to identify an appropriate sponsor at their institution if necessary.
