NMC Affiliate Geoffrey Reeves Named Fellow of the American Geophysical Union
The American Geophysical Union (AGU), one of the world’s leading organizations for Earth and space science, has named Geoffrey D. Reeves an AGU Fellow in recognition of his outstanding scientific achievements, leadership, and contributions to the field of space science. Reeves was among just 62 scientists selected for this prestigious honor and was recognized at AGU’s annual Fall Meeting in Washington, D.C.
Election as an AGU Fellow is one of the highest honors in the geosciences. Each year, no more than 0.1 percent of AGU’s more than 60,000 members are selected for Fellowship, recognizing individuals who have made exceptional contributions to Earth and space sciences through research, innovation, and service to the scientific community.
Reeves is a scientist at Los Alamos National Laboratory and an affiliate of the New Mexico Consortium whose research has significantly advanced our understanding of space weather and the near-Earth space environment. His work focuses on the Van Allen radiation belts—two regions of highly energetic charged particles trapped by Earth’s magnetic field. These radiation belts are a critical component of the space environment surrounding our planet and can have important impacts on satellites, communications systems, navigation technologies, and other space-based infrastructure.
Throughout his career, Reeves has played a leading role in studying how the Van Allen belts respond to solar storms and other space weather events. His research has helped scientists better understand the complex processes that accelerate and transport energetic particles in near-Earth space. These discoveries have contributed to improved models and forecasting capabilities, helping protect satellites and other technologies from the potentially damaging effects of space weather.
In addition to his scientific accomplishments, Reeves has been recognized for his leadership within the space science community and his contributions to collaborative research efforts. His work continues to influence the fields of heliophysics, magnetospheric physics, and space weather prediction.
