Optimization and Control Systems

Project Title
Dr. Kaarthik Sundar – LANL/NMC Research Scientist, Joint Appointee
Optimization and Control Systems research at the NMC develops mathematical, computational, and data-driven methods for UAVs, robotics, motion planning, operations research, and finite- and infinite-dimensional optimization in interconnected infrastructure systems. This area focuses on the modeling, analysis, and control of complex engineered and cyber-physical systems, with applications spanning autonomous vehicles, resilient infrastructure, energy systems, transportation networks, and large-scale decision-making under uncertainty.
Research in this topic includes optimal control, trajectory planning, distributed coordination, resource allocation, network optimization, robust and stochastic optimization, and scalable algorithms for systems with many interacting components. A key emphasis is placed on interdependent infrastructure systems, where physical, digital, and operational networks are optimized together to improve performance, reliability, resilience, and adaptability.
