Anthony Marcozzi Publishes Work on the FastFuels Fire Modeling Platform

Anthony  Marcozzi, scientist in the New Mexico Consortium Center for Applied Fire and Ecosystem Sciences (CAFES), recently published his work titled FastFuels: Advancing wildland fire modeling with high-resolution 3D fuel data and data assimilation in the Environmental Modelling & Software Journal.

Obtaining precise 3D fuel data for advanced fire models continues to be a difficult task, especially on a large scale. In response to this challenge, Marcozzi’s research introduces FastFuels, a cutting-edge platform designed to generate comprehensive 3D fuel data and streamline the use of advanced fire models.

Integrating fuel and spatial data, FastFuels uses new modeling techniques to accurately depict 3D fuel patterns across various landscapes, and leverages data from sources like the Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) database and plot imputation maps. It also incorporates advanced features such as data assimilation from LiDAR technology.

This research shows FastFuels’ capabilities through two applications: assessing the effectiveness of fuel treatments with the Fire Dynamics Simulator and simulating a prescribed fire operation using QUIC-Fire.

FastFuels offers groundbreaking 3D fuel data on a landscape scale, which was previously unavailable. It provides valuable insights for informed decision-making, detailed analysis of fuel treatment impacts, and more precise risk assessments. Its adaptable data integration and model-agnostic outputs drive innovation in fire science and assist in making strategic fire management decisions.

With this work the New Mexico Consortium continues to play a critical role in a multi-agency and partnership collaboration. This effort is focused on expanding the toolkit for ecological monitoring, fuels mapping, and prescribed fire planning to improve ecosystem and landscape resilience. The introduction of FastFuels bridges a crucial gap between cutting edge monitoring efforts and next generation fire models developed by our CAFES team and the Los Alamos National Laboratory.
