LANL Foundation Launches New Graduate Scholarship for New Mexico’s National Security Workforce
The LANL Foundation has launched a new graduate scholarship aimed at helping New Mexico students prepare for careers in national security at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). Called the National Security Workforce Graduate Scholarship, the program is designed to support students pursuing advanced degrees in fields that are critical to the LANL’s mission and to the region’s long-term workforce needs.
The scholarship is funded through the National Nuclear Security Administration as part of an initiative focused on strengthening the plutonium and national security workforce. The New Mexico Consortium and Los Alamos National Laboratory are key partners in the effort, working with the LANL Foundation to expand graduate-level financial support for students studying in New Mexico.
Starting in the spring of 2026, the program will award up to eight scholarships each year. Each recipient will receive a total of $10,000 ($5,000 per year, paid out over two years) and funding for the scholarship is guaranteed through 2028. The goal is to help close a long-standing gap in graduate funding in Northern New Mexico, encourage students to stay in the state for their graduate education, and create clearer pathways from New Mexico universities into careers at LANL
Students must be enrolled, or planning to enroll, in a New Mexico college or university and they must be pursuing a graduate degree in areas such as nuclear materials science and engineering, materials characterization, precision instrumentation and measurement, project and contract management, or business administration. Applicants may receive the scholarship up to two times, though priority will be given to first-time recipients. Applications are open now and will be accepted through March 1, 2026.
