NMC Funds Oppenheimer Scholarship Awarded to High School Senior Deshawn Sanchez

The New Mexico Consortium (NMC) is a proud supporter of the J. Robert Oppenheimer Memorial Committee (JROMC) scholarships.  The JROMC is dedicated to preserving the legacy of Robert Oppenheimer, the first director of Los Alamos National Laboratory and one of the most influential scientists of the 20th Century. This Oppenheimer scholarship is awarded to high school seniors at Los Alamos, Pojoaque Valley, Santa Fe and Capital High Schools based on merit and to recognize a variety of achievements.

Scholarship WinnerEach year, New Mexico Consortium funds one J. Robert Oppenheimer Scholarship to be awarded to a student from a regional high school who shows exceptional promise of future contributions to society and plans to attend a New Mexico school of higher education. The amount of the scholarship is $3000. The NMC first awarded the J. Robert Oppenheimer Scholarship to a Los Alamos graduating senior in 1984, and since then more than $668,000 has been awarded in scholarships.

This year, the NMC funded J. Robert Oppenheimer Scholarship is awarded to Deshawn Sanchez of Santa Fe, NM. The JROMC was impressed by her academic record, her strong, well thought out career plan and her genuine desire to help others in her community as well as her involvement in HOSA – Future Health Professionals, a global student-led organization, whose mission is to promote career opportunities in the health industry and to enhance the delivery of quality health care to all people.

Deshawn currently is a senior at Capital High School in Santa Fe. After graduating, she will be attending Santa Fe Community College to receive her associates degree in nursing. She plans next attend the University of New Mexico for a Masters in Nursing, and will go on to study Psychiatry with the goal of becoming a psychiatric nurse practitioner.

Deshawn states that she, “…is grateful for the opportunity to seek a life long aspiration of which would be far from reach if not for this scholarship”.

This scholarship program is supported by several limited term endowments, individual donations, and major contributions from the New Mexico Consortium, the Delle Foundation, and The Los Alamos High School Class of 1969.
