USRC Student Highlights at the New Mexico Consortium

The New Mexico Consortium (NMC) would like to highlight two NMC students working at the Ultrascale Systems Research Center and their incredible work in machine learning and computer science: Drew Graham and Chris Stokes.

Drew GrahamDrew Graham is a Carolina Coastal University student finishing up his B.S. in computer science and is starting a PhD in Computer Engineering at Clemson University. He worked as a LANL-NMC student for the summer of 2024 and will be back for the summer of 2025. His research focuses on contributing to the Applied Machine Learning project.

He recently attended the Conference on Data Analysis (CoDA), held on February 25, 2025 in Santa Fe, New Mexico, where he presented a poster titled, “Machine Learning for Surrogate Modeling of Scientific Codes: Practice and Experience”.

Drew also was a part of the team that published a conference paper on their work titled “Applied Machine Learning for Surrogate Modeling: A Spatio-Temporal Approach,” This paper is was published as part of  the 23rd annual IEEE International Conference on Machine Learning Applications.

Chris StokesThe NMC would also like to highlight another student, Chris Stokes. Chris is a high school student at Saugerties Senior High School in New York, and is also a part time research assistant at Carolina Coastal University.

His research and expertise are primarily focused in Mathematics, Data Science, and General Computing Sciences. As a LANL/NMC student, Chris has been working on a project to accurately predict and model the energy usage of supercomputing systems using machine learning as a part of the HPC Simulation and Scheduling project.

Chris also attended CoDA, where he presented a poster titled, “Applying Machine Learning to Improve HPC Energy and Power Forecasting”,

Their mentor William M. Jones (Coastal Carolina University/LANL HPC-DES) states, “I’m extremely proud of their progress and contributions, and I look forward to continuing our collaborations with them as they continue their academic careers.”

Congratulations to Drew and Chris for all their hard work and accomplishments!
