Phytochrome and Phytohormones: Working in Tandem for Plant Growth and Develop

New Mexico Consortium Biolab researchers Panagiotis Lymperopoulos, Joseph Msanne, and Roel Rabara recently published their work, “Phytochrome and Phytohormones: Working in Tandem for Plant Growth and Development,” in the July 2018 issue of Frontiers in Plant Science, in the Plant Physiology section.

The publication is a review article that examines the important relationship between phytochromes and phytohormones in regulating plant growth and development. Phytochromes are light-sensitive proteins that help plants detect and respond to changes in their environment, while phytohormones are chemical messengers that control many aspects of plant growth, development, and stress response. Together, these systems help plants adjust to changing light conditions, environmental pressures, and developmental needs.

In their review, the authors present a representative regulatory model describing how phytochromes and phytohormones interact at multiple levels within plants. They also highlight recent advances and successful strategies used to better understand these complex interactions. By bringing together current knowledge in the field, the review provides valuable insight into how plants coordinate light perception and hormonal signaling to regulate growth, development, and function.

The article also offers perspectives for future research, particularly in understanding how phytochrome-phytohormone relationships can be used to support plant performance under abiotic and biotic stresses. Abiotic stresses, such as drought, salinity, and temperature extremes, and biotic stresses, such as pests and pathogens, can significantly affect plant productivity. A better understanding of these signaling networks may help researchers develop strategies to improve plant resilience, growth, and overall health.
