Harshini Mukundan Selected AAAS IF/THEN Ambassador

The New Mexico Consortium (NMC) extends its congratulations to Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) bioscientist and NMC affiliate Dr. Harshini Mukundan on her selection as one of 125 American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) IF/THEN Ambassadors. This prestigious honor recognizes accomplished women in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) who are dedicated not only to advancing their fields but also to inspiring the next generation of innovators.

The IF/THEN initiative was created to increase the visibility of women in STEM and encourage more young women and girls to pursue careers in scientific and technical disciplines. Through a national network of ambassadors, the program highlights diverse role models whose achievements demonstrate the exciting possibilities available in STEM careers.

As an IF/THEN Ambassador, Dr. Mukundan joins a distinguished group of scientists, engineers, technologists, and mathematicians who are committed to engaging with students and communities across the country. Ambassadors serve as mentors, advocates, and public representatives for STEM education, sharing their experiences and encouraging young people—particularly middle-school girls—to explore their interests in science and technology.

Dr. Mukundan has earned recognition for her groundbreaking research and leadership in the biosciences. Her work exemplifies the innovation and dedication that drive scientific discovery and contribute to solving complex global challenges. In addition to her research accomplishments, she has demonstrated a strong commitment to outreach and science communication, making scientific concepts more accessible and inspiring future generations to pursue their own scientific ambitions.

The IF/THEN initiative seeks to address the gender gap that continues to exist in many STEM fields by providing young women with relatable role models and tangible examples of success. Research has shown that seeing women thrive in STEM careers can have a powerful impact on girls’ confidence and aspirations, helping them envision themselves as future scientists, engineers, and innovators.

Dr. Mukundan’s selection as an AAAS IF/THEN Ambassador is a testament to both her scientific achievements and her dedication to mentoring and inspiring young people. Through her participation in the program, she will help encourage the next generation of STEM pioneers and demonstrate that curiosity, perseverance, and passion can lead to meaningful and impactful careers in science.

NMC is proud to celebrate Dr. Mukundan’s accomplishment and looks forward to seeing the positive influence she will continue to have on students, researchers, and aspiring scientists across the nation.
