NMC Scientist Rex Hjelm Publishes Groundbreaking Research and Joins National Neutron Outreach Program

The New Mexico Consortium (NMC) is proud to recognize the achievements of Dr. Rex Hjelm, who continues to make significant contributions to materials science and user facility outreach. Dr. Hjelm has recently co-authored two high-impact research papers in collaboration with scientists from Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), and has been selected as one of four national “Ambassadors” for the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) Neutron Scattering Program.

Recent Publications Advance Energy and Materials Science

Dr. Hjelm’s recent work, in collaboration with LANL’s Earth and Environmental Sciences (EES) and Materials Physics and Applications (MPA) divisions, has yielded two major publications:

  • “Unravelling the origins of shale nanoporosity using small-angle neutron scattering (SANS)”. Published in Fuel, 2025

This study explores the nanoscale structure of shale using advanced neutron scattering techniques, helping to better understand porosity at the microscopic level. These insights are critical for improving energy extraction and environmental impact. DOI: 10.1016/j.fuel.2025.134578

  • “Colloidal Nafion Morphology in 1,2-Alkanediols and its Impact on Membrane and Ionomer Properties”. In press, Chemical Engineering Journal, 2025

This paper investigates the behavior of Nafion, a widely used ionomer in fuel cells, when dispersed in alkanediols. The findings have implications for the development of more efficient fuel cells with and improved durability. DOI: 10.1016/j.cej.2025.163884

Appointed as ORNL Neutron Ambassador

Dr. Hjelm has also been selected as one of four national Neutron Ambassadors for the ORNL Neutron Scattering Program. In this prestigious outreach role, he will deliver lectures, organize symposia at national scientific meetings, and actively promote user access to ORNL’s world-class neutron facilities. While centered at ORNL, the ambassador program will also benefit LANL’s Lujan Neutron Scattering Center by expanding collaborative ties and increasing user engagement—particularly among regional institutions.

Details about the program can be found on the Neutron Ambassador Program website.
