NMC Scientist Rex Hjelm to Give Talk on Neutron Scattering at UNM

New Mexico Consortium scientist Rex Hjelm, who also serves as a Neutron Ambassador with Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), will give a talk on neutron scattering at the University of New Mexico on Wednesday, October 1. The event will take place at the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering.

The talk, titled Neutron Scattering for Science: A Primer, is part of the ORNL Neutron Ambassador program, which supports outreach and collaboration with universities and research institutions. Dr. Hjelm will present a high-level overview of neutron scattering techniques and the facilities available at ORNL, one of the world’s premier centers for neutron science.

His presentation will emphasize how these techniques can be applied to pressing challenges in biological sciences and electrochemistry, highlighting the role of neutron scattering in exploring the structure and behavior of materials at the atomic and molecular level. This powerful approach enables researchers to better understand complex systems ranging from proteins and membranes to energy storage technologies.

By bringing insight into cutting-edge experimental methods, the talk aims to foster connections between New Mexico researchers and the world-class resources available at Oak Ridge National Laboratory.
