NMC Supports Two J. Robert Oppenheimer Scholarship Recipients

The New Mexico Consortium (NMC) is proud to support two outstanding Northern New Mexico students through the J. Robert Oppenheimer Scholarship program, administered by the J. Robert Oppenheimer Memorial Committee (JROMC).

The JROMC recently announced the 24 recipients of its 2026 scholarship awards for Los Alamos and regional high school seniors. The scholarships recognize students who, in the spirit of excellence and open inquiry exemplified by J. Robert Oppenheimer, have demonstrated exceptional promise in the sciences, arts, and service to society.

This year, NMC-funded J. Robert Oppenheimer Scholarships were awarded to:

Calvin Marksteiner – Los Alamos High School

Calvin Marksteiner received the J. Robert Oppenheimer Scholarship funded by the New Mexico Consortium. This scholarship is awarded to a student who shows exceptional promise of future contributions to society and plans to attend a New Mexico institution of higher education.

Calvin plans to attend New Mexico State University to study physics and pursue a PhD. Calvin has demonstrated strong academic achievement at Los Alamos High School through a rigorous course of study in physics and mathematics, including AP Physics C and advanced calculus. He has been an active member of Science Bowl, where he has deepened his knowledge of physics and chemistry while preparing for regional competition. In addition, he has shown leadership as a section leader in band and balances his academic commitments with part-time work, reflecting responsibility and dedication. As Calvin stated in his essay, “My goal is to study to earn a PhD and make discoveries which will contribute to the scientific community as a whole.”

Emily Trevizo – Capital High School

Emily Trevizo also received a J. Robert Oppenheimer Scholarship funded by the New Mexico Consortium. The award recognizes students who demonstrate exceptional potential for future contributions to society and who intend to pursue higher education in New Mexico. Emily plans to attend New Mexico State University to study psychology and business administration. Studying human behavior is a passion and she wants to translate this into helping others through a career in industrial organizational psychology. She is inspired by family and historical figures to value civic education, civil rights, and to be resilient and help make a difference by showing up in rooms where she is not expected to be to motivate others. She is a regular Big Brothers and Big Sisters volunteer and loves spending time with family, outdoors, and trying new food.

Through their academic achievements, commitment to learning, and aspirations for the future, Marksteiner and Trevizo exemplify the curiosity, innovation, and pursuit of excellence that define the legacy of J. Robert Oppenheimer and the scholarship established in his honor.

The 2026 scholarship recipients were recognized at a banquet preceding the 53rd Oppenheimer Memorial Lecture, which was presented by Professor Dante Lauretta on Monday, June 22, at 7:00 p.m. at the Duane Smith Auditorium in Los Alamos.

The J. Robert Oppenheimer Memorial Committee is a nonprofit organization dedicated to honoring Oppenheimer’s legacy through public lectures by distinguished speakers, scholarships for high school students, and science education outreach throughout Northern New Mexico. Since 1984, the organization has awarded more than 352 scholarships totaling more than $942,500.

“NMC is honored to support these scholarships and to help recognize exceptional students who represent the future of science, innovation, and leadership in New Mexico,” said NMC CEO John Engen. “We congratulate Calvin and Emily on their achievements and wish them continued success in their academic journeys.”
