NMC Hosts Summer Picnic Celebrating Supercomputer Institute Interns

The New Mexico Consortium (NMC) hosted a celebratory picnic on Thursday, July 31, honoring the 2025 the Supercomputer Institute and high-performance computing (HPC) summer internship students hired by Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL).

The student picnic brought together interns, LANL mentors, and NMC staff for food, conversation, and community. It was a chance to reflect on the students’ growth and accomplishments over the course of an intensive, 11-week technical program.

These internships are a summer program organized by LANL’s High Performance Computing Division. Each year, the program welcomes a talented group of students including high school, undergraduates, graduate students, and post master’s students. These students come from institutions across the United States, bringing a diversity of academic backgrounds, perspectives, and interests to the program. The program introduces participants to the world of HPC through immersive, hands-on experiences.

The following week, students presented their work in a formal Showcase, delivering technical talks and poster sessions to LANL leadership, researchers, and peers. The Showcase was the culmination of their summer journey and highlighted the real-world impact of their contributions.

As the 2025 Supercomputer Institute draws to a close, the NMC applauds the interns’ hard work, creativity, and commitment—and look forward to seeing how these future scientists and engineers will shape the future of computational science.
