Time to Register for the 36th Supercomputing Challenge!

Time to register for the 36th annual Supercomputing Challenge! The Supercomputing Challenge is gearing up for another year-long marathon of creativity, problem-solving, and innovation for the 2025–2026 school year. This year’s theme is Artificial Intelligence (AI), giving students the opportunity to explore one of the most exciting areas in science and technology.

The Supercomputing Challenge invites middle and high school students from across New Mexico to research, design, and present a computational science project using real high-performance computing resources. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced programmer, you’ll work with mentors, collaborate with teammates, and gain hands-on skills that will serve you well beyond the classroom.

Registration for individuals opens August 15 and runs through September 30, with teams finalized by the September 30 deadline. Proposals are due before October 10, just ahead of the Kickoff at New Mexico Tech on October 11–12.

Throughout the year, participants will submit progress updates, including interim reports in December and project evaluations in February at universities statewide. Scholarship applications are due March 1, and both final reports and Expo registrations must be submitted by April 1. The year concludes with judges’ calls on April 15 and the grand Expo in Los Alamos on April 20–21, 2026.

This program is more than just a competition. It’s a chance to tackle real-world challenges, explore the power of AI in science and engineering, and join a statewide community of innovators. The earlier you register, the more time you’ll have to develop your project and connect with mentors!
